The Queens Gambit: A Review

Hi, Im Meher, a subfrshman at Uni High, and welcome to my TV show review! Today, I'll be reviewing The Queen's Gambit. which is a seven part series on Netflix that I'm sure you may have heard of. It has gained quite a reputation for being an oustanding show. Usually, I would go for shows that seem compelling and suspenseful, both being things I would never have thought The Queen's Gambit would fit. However, I was hooked as soon as I watched the first epiode.

This series is about chess, a game that I never found to be interesting or exciting, however The Queen's Gambit completely changed my perspective on it. Set in the 1850s-60s, this show follows the life of a competive chess player who goes through several challenges in her life. The show opens with a young woman (who we soon learn is Beth Harmon, the main protagonist), oversleeping and scrambling to get ready for a chess game. The opening is set in Paris in the 1960s, but it soon leaps back in time to the 50s when Beth is a young girl. From then on, the episodes tell her life story up until the current moment in the opening scene. This series has a bit of everything in it; from suspense to drama to comedy, you'll find yourself going through several different emtions.
